If you know theres a problem, try to fix it.
by: Anonymous

I do not have children of my own, I am simply a college student writing an agumentative paper about childhood obesity and if the parents should be punished.

I believe the parents should be punished. Feeling sorry for your children is one thing, doing something about it is another. If you and your children could lose some weight, do activities together!

If you know your children have a problem you should be doing something about it, that is your responsibilty as the parent.

There is a general standard which parents must meet in today's society. Failing to do so is in most cases illegal and will get your children taken away from you. The reasoning is that society does not want to deal with the potential monster that your inadequacy as a parent will probably lead to.

While in YOUR mind, obesity as a child is no big deal... perhaps you're unable to EMPATHISE with other people, even with your own children. That's unfortunate.

I'm a father of a 4 year old boy and I can FORSEE the social pressures he'll face growing up. As a parent it is MY JOB to ensure that he can deal with these pressures adequately on his own when then time comes for him to do so. I know how mean kids are; there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. Its natural human behavior. Its my job as a parent to raise my child into a socially acceptable human being. This includes safeguarding and optimizing his health and development by providing nutritious food that I know to be good for him. Its part common sense, but for some it takes a minimal amount of research. Whole, natural foods, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, organic dairy, unprocessed meat. Its not that difficult to figure out. Encourage exercise because common sense should tell you that kids naturally run around all the time because it contributes to their growth and development. It is NECESSARY. ESSENTIAL. A required part of growing up. And if you're failing to provide these basic necessities for your children, I'm sorry, you're too incompetent to be parents. If you let them consume, indulge, feast, on excessive amounts of unnatural, processed, sugary CRAP on a continual basis, how is ANY different than a parent who does nothing to stop their kids from doing heroin? Or methamphetamine? Or binge drinking? You KNOW its unnatural, you know its unhealthy, but you give it to them anyway!? Go to JAIL. Get steralized before you come back to sociey.

Its parents like this who raise over-weight, socially dysfunctional, disease-ridden, weak, cant-hack-it, cry babies who go through life playing victims and blaming their problems on everyone else. These are the people who call the cops on you when a wind storm blows your trash can lid onto their front lawn. They're inferior and miserable because of it. You know why? They had parents who didn't know what they were doing raising kids, and when the kids' peers started vehemently rejecting them, the parents, failing miserably at their job some more, told their kids that THE PEERS were wrong and that the kids inferiorities were perfectly normal! Imagine where this leads to as these children "mature" into adults... they become psychologically dysfuntional misanthropists who do nothing good for anyone but themselves and who spend their life retaliating against society for the way they were treated as children. Way to go you great parents! So glad you had the chance to procreate!

Pro-Criminal Punishment; it's child neglect

I just wish to ask a question. You are pleading a "woe is me" case here. Genetics are definitely a factor (as well as would be a part of an investigation into abuse); however, how often are YOU enforcing your children get exercise?
The amount recommended (and quite frankly, needed), is 60 minutes a day.
How much sugar do YOU let your children eat?
How many saturated and trans fats do you allow your children to eat?

Even with poor genetics, a person can remain well within the realm of healthy weight/BMI and muscle mass as long as they eat a proper & nutritious diet, combined with a proper amount of exercise.

If your kids are overweight, it only stands to reason they are NOT eating a healthy diet, nor getting a good enough amount of exercise. That IS abuse.

It is your responsibility
by: Anthony Howell

Genetics are not to blame.

You as a parent are responsible for ensuring your children watch what they eat and get proper exercise.
see newsweek article

As the Obama's put it: It is common sense of how to rid a society of obesity. So get up and move! Stop sitting in front of the television and the computer, stop allowing your children to sit and play video games for hours, and take responsibility and assert your authority as an adult and kick them outside for at least 30-45 minutes each day.

I am tired of individuals blaming genetics for a problem that starts at home.

Genetics can only be blamed for so much but luckily it can be changed with an altered lifestyle.

So keep your head up and get your kids outside in the swimming pool or in a soccer game and remember to MOVE! Be sure to watch what you eat.

I agree
by: Anonymous

Unfortunately, I am suffering from anorexia nervosa. I am 21 years old, and am close to being diagnosed as terminal.

I understand the problems your children face. As a child, I was not only picked on for being heftier by my peers and classmates, but my family as well.

I cannot imagine your children's plight as they now have the government stepping in to make them feel worse.

There are bigger problems than obesity like, say major depression. The more we focus on obesity, the more I'm afraid that we're raising a generation of severely clinically depressed children.

My heart goes out to you and your children.
